Jill Stein, otherwise known as Dr. Stein, is a Green Party Presidential Candidate. After graduating from Harvard she then continued onto Harvard Medical School to be a physician. Once she started her career as a physician she became intrigued about the connection between the environment and health. This lead her to becoming very involved in her local community where she was the co-chair of the Lexington Recycling Committee and where she developed the “Healthy People, Healthy Planet,” educational program. Following this she has run for multiple offices in past years, which included running for president during the 2012 elections.
Being a presidential candidate for the green party naturally one of her biggest concerns is the environment. If elected Stein intends to put into action a Green New Deal. This deal would include “Create millions of jobs by transitioning to 100% clean renewable energy by 2030, and investing in public transit, sustainable agriculture, and conservation.” Most politicians have been talking about being more energy efficient, like Democratic Presidential Candidate Martin O’Malley who plans to be energy efficient by 2050. If Steins Green New Deal is put into action the United States will be 100% energy efficient by 2030 a whole 20 years earlier than Martin O’Malley’s plan.
In a statement Jill released on her website she explained,
“My Power to the People Plan creates deep system change, moving from the greed and exploitation of corporate capitalism to a human-centered economy that puts people, planet and peace over profit.
It offers direct answers to the economic, social, and ecological crises brought on by both corporate political parties. And it empowers the American people to fix our broken political system and make real the promise of democracy.
This plan will end unemployment and poverty; avert climate catastrophe; build a sustainable, just economy; and recognize the dignity and human rights of everyone in our society and our world. The power to create this new world is not in our hopes, it’s not in our dreams – it’s in our hands.”
