What is Planned Parenthood? Where does all of the government funding go? There is currently a lot of hype going on, whether or not government funding should be withdrawn from Planned Parenthood, but before decisions can be made, light should be shed on to what Planned Parenthood really does. Planned Parenthood is more than just an abortion clinic in fact only “...three percent of all Planned Parenthood health services are abortion services,” as stated on their website. That leaves the other ninety-seven percent of their services going to sex education, pap smear tests, breast examinations, the testing and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases and various other services that are not limited to helping just women. Politicians who are uneducated on the subject are constantly making wild accusations without facts to back them up; we must bring it upon ourselves to become educated.
Republican Presidential Candidate Jeb Bush said “I’m not sure we need half a billion dollars for women’s health issues.” Planned Parenthood goes beyond women’s health issues. Men are in need of sex education and are at as much risk for needing to be tested and receive treatment for an STD as any woman. Statistics provided from the Planned Parenthood website tell us that “2.7 million women AND men in the United States annually visit Planned Parenthood affiliate health centers for trusted health care services and information.”
In a Poll taken by the Wall Street Journal it was “found almost half (47 percent) of Americans had a positive opinion of Planned Parenthood, while fewer than a third (31 percent) had a negative one.” Frankly, a lot of politicians remain uneducated and do not understand the repercussions of defunding Planned Parenthood. In an Abortion Debate Carly Fiorina made wild accusations about an anti-abortion video that had no ties to Planned Parenthood. The video was later investigated by CNN and debunked saying that there is no proof that the video was of an abortion or a miscarriage. Without Planned Parenthood funding, both men and women will have less access to sex education, pap smear tests, breast examinations, the testing and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases and various other services. The Planned Parenthood website says “whether talking with members of Congress, parents, or faith leaders, or arguing cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, we fight for commonsense policies that promote women’s health, allow individuals to prevent unintended pregnancies through access to affordable contraception, and protect the health of young people by providing them with comprehensive sex education.”
Now ask yourself, do you stand with Planned Parenthood?
